What is an Action Group

One of the ways DAW seeks to achieve its mission and expand its influence is through local action groups....with the operative word being “ACTION”. And that's where you – and we – come in. Through involvement in the Portland Action Group, you can explore alternative solutions that can change the foundation of our economy, meet like-minded people in a friendly, open environment, and continue to educate yourself about one of the most important aspects of all our lives – our economy.
No matter our age, gender, background, race, or any other classification, we are all affected in some way by our economy. Yet, for most of us, our “economic IQ's” are lacking, and thus we see ourselves – to the extent we think about it all – as subject to what appears to be a huge, formless, complex “thing” that is as much beyond our understanding as it is beyond our control. We each strive to do our best within its overreaching confines, but ultimately we feel unable to have much effect on the economy one way or the other. Most of us are unaware of its history, its purpose, its relationship to us and vice versa, and why we in the USA (and most other countries) operate under this system we call Capitalism.

Economic Inequality

Economic inequality – the huge and growing divide between the haves and have-nots, the likes of which no one alive has ever confronted, is increasingly in the news and on our minds. Both in the USA and worldwide, statistics demonstrate the extent to which wealth is held in the hands of a few, while most of us “make do” with shrinking slices of the pie. And again: WHY? What other choices might we have made along the way to this disastrous situation? What are our options going forward? D@W groups are here to help us to explore our economic lives and to consider alternatives to the economic system we operate under. How did we get here? What is our current situation? Who and what are the key elements in it? Where might we be headed? Might there be some economic alternatives that would serve us better....that would lessen inequality and enhance social justice? As Dr. Wolff often remarks, no one can predict the future – economic or otherwise – but the more we educate ourselves, the better off we are. The more we know about the economic environment in which we live our lives, and about viable alternatives to that system, the better our ability to ACT in ways designed to improve our lives and the lives of everyone in our economic community
